A Pool Table Purchasing Guide

Pool tables have evolved considerably from the stuffy billiard rooms and smokey snooker pubs of the past. Though they are still used primarily for home entertainment, the rise of active office spaces has transformed the traditional pool table into an essential piece of sports entertainment equipment in the workplace. Whether you’re looking into home or office use, the following pool table purchasing guide should give you some pointers to consider before purchasing.

Keep in mind while shopping that the standard 8-ball pool table is 275cm x 140cm. Using a standard 148cm cue stick, the pool room dimensions should be at least 550cm x 412cm to accommodate all aspects of play. You can certainly opt for a smaller size, but anything under 2.74m long is not held in very high regard, and is usually reserved for practice rounds by the serious player.

In the Home: In most cases, having a full-sized pool table in the house can be quite an intrusion into the living space, so it helps to be able to convert it to other practical uses. In addition to all the variations of billiard games, you can get table-top conversions for games such as ping-pong, shuffleboard, and air hockey that will give your family and guests a variety of gaming options to choose from.

Pool tables make great dining tables by virtue of their sheer size and sturdiness of construction. While protecting the playing surface is the main concern, the ways to achieve this can be either inexpensive or very costly. On the low end of the price scale are folding vinyl, plastic, or composite wood products that tend to be rather thin – on the high end are more elaborate and costly solid wood sections that create a perfectly flat surface with complete coverage of the side rails.

The same way a pool table is easily transformed into multiple purposes in the home can be applied to the office as well. Aside from all the aforementioned games, popular board and card games fit perfectly on a full-sized pool table top, and it is possible for several of these games to be played at the same time.

One of the greatest impacts a pool table can have in active office spaces is when it is fully converted to a branded conference table. Depending on what logo, message, or mission statement your company chooses to emphasize, a billiard table reconfigured as a boardroom centerpiece is certain to leave a lasting impression on employees and visitors.

Even if your office floor space is limited, you still might be able to fit a smaller “bar box” type billiards table of 2.1m or less in an out-of -the-way corner of the company break room. These smaller tables have the advantage of being more portable and moveable than the full-sized ones, and integrate very well with other office sports entertainment equipment that needs to be re-positioned from time to time.

Although there are less costly forms of pool table construction, like plywood and MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard), the best choice for long-term, durable use is either solid hardwood, or HDF (High Density Fiberboard). The reason for this is, given the fact that the billiards table will have to support up to 500 lbs of weight, you will need something very substantial to run heavy-duty screws and bolts through. Cheaper materials will not have the superior screw holding capability that solid wood or HDF has to offer.

Particular attention should be given to the specific components that make up a well-built pool table:

[su_column size=”2/3″]Frames need to be extra supportive of the heavy slate playfield. If only part of the frame contacts the slate, having the surface crack at some point is a distinct possibility. Ideally, the legs should be solid wood all the way up to and contacting the slate for better support of this heavy component.[/su_column]

[su_column size=”2/3″]Rails are usually made of solid wood as well, to avoid the chipping and peeling that occurs in particle board when the rubber cushions need to be replaced.[/su_column]

[su_column size=”2/3″]Cushions installed on top-notch tables should be the full profile, K-66 type, made of grade A rubber for better ball rebound characteristics. Canvas backing is also important to aid in securing the cushions to the rails, and stabilize the amount of flex in the rubber.[/su_column]

[su_column size=”2/3″]Slates of superior playfields are typically 3/4” (19.05mm) or more in thickness, and are diamond honed for a perfectly smooth surface. Beware of any particle board framing supports, as the weight of slate stone can easily create distortions in this material that can result in an uneven playing surface.[/su_column]

[su_column size=”2/3″]Cloth installed on most billiard tables is made from a blend of natural wool and synthetic nylon. The exact combination is based on the action of the balls – if you desire a faster running game, go with more nylon content than wool. For games in the home that tend to be somewhat slower, more wool is needed. Professional -grade billiard tables use an 80% wool to 20% nylon mix.[/su_column]

As mentioned earlier, the branded pool table can be a real attention-getter in the workplace, and coin operated types are frequently used in this setting. These tables tend to be more durable and low-maintenance than home entertainment varieties, and the money generated can pay for office parties or other activities. Coin operated pool tables have the added advantage of a higher resale value due to the coin mechanism.

The pool dining table is an excellent choice for home use. These dual-purpose units are positioned at the right height for comfortable seating, and are designed to accommodate standard dining chairs. When the meal is over, you can either leave the table top in place for any number of games, or remove it entirely to shoot some 8-ball.

As a final piece of advice, if you only plan on playing pool occasionally, it’s best to go with a table type that can be easily converted to other uses. Similar to having a grand piano in the house, a professionally constructed pool table is a major expense that you might be forced to justify as a “wise investment” if it sits idle day after day!
